Chapter 12

Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia

One of Jack’s most controversial statements, especially among Protestants leaning toward the fundamentalist side, was in reaction to those who feared England was heading back into paganism. To that, all he had to say was, “Good.” Paganism, he was convinced, was a stepping stone toward Christianity. Protestants complained that Catholicism had allowed itself to absorb facets of the existing religions (usually pagan) wherever it took root, making it less than pure Christianity. This was clearly visible in Jack’s native Ireland, where superstitions and legends carried over from the Druid (pagan) religion before Saint Patrick are still kept alive with much enthusiasm. Narnia, in its second volume, is a world very much like Ireland before and during Saint Patrick’s time—a place where magic was believed in and taken seriously.
